Born in New York in 1950, living and working in South Africa for nearly 40 years, Roger Ballen is one of the world’s most remarkable, and critically acclaimed photographers of the 21st Century. He has published over 25 books internationally. Throughout his career, Roger Ballen has pursued a singular artistic goal: to give expression to the human psyche and visually explore the hidden forces that shape who we are.

For this years’ European Month Of Photography’, Valerius Gallery presents a range of Ballen’s works from his well renowned series ‘Shadow Chamber’, ‘Asylum of the Birds’ and ‘Boarding House’, fittingly exploring the theme of identity. Ballen's works are present in the most prominent Museum collections like the MOMA, NY; TATE Britain, London; Victoria and Albert Museum, London; The International Center for Photography, NY; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; Centre Pompidou, Paris; amongst others. In 2022 Roger Ballen represented South Africa at the Venice Biennale, Italy.
