MONIQUE BECKER
Where the light goes quiet
at BIL Luxembourg
24 February - 22 May 2026
Where the Light Goes Quiet presents an ensemble of works produced over the past nine years by Luxembourgish artist Monique Becker (b. 1958), tracing the evolution of artistic trajectories developed between 2017 and 2025. The exhibition marks her seventh solo show in collaboration with Valerius Gallery.
Monique Becker’s large-scale paintings are built through layers of thick, textured paint that form dense, almost sculptural surfaces. For Becker, black is far from neutral, it is a charged, deliberate choice, rich with meaning. The paintings don’t tell a clear story, instead, they ask the viewer to slow down, look closely, and engage with what’s hidden beneath the surface. The artist’s process of layering becomes a way of both revealing and concealing—an ongoing negotiation between control and vulnerability.
Becker’s work is present in the Collection of MUDAM, Museum of Contemporary Art Luxembourg, MNAHA, Musée National d’Archéologie, d’Histoire et d’Art and the Ministry of Culture, Luxembourg.
