Biography & Statement
André Wendland finds inspiration in the everyday, seeing creative potential everywhere and exploring it through his painting. His work, influenced by cartoon aesthetics, transcends traditional narratives, using vibrant, bold colors to bring his fresh characters to life. This approach offers viewers an engaging, immersive experience.
Wendland is particularly interested in transferring the dynamic motion of animation into the static medium of painting. This exploration has led him to create vibrant works that often fill the entire visual space of a painting with cartoon-like figures.
The artist works thematically in a serial way, using humorous and caricatured subjects that often provoke laughter with a touch of empathy. His large, flat areas of paint show a joy for color, especially in oil on canvas. While the subject matter is important, the act of painting itself—manipulating and bringing the material to life—takes precedence. He uses an iPad for sketching and embraces spontaneity in his creative process.
